Vector Technology Institute 20th Anniversary
June 12, 2017
I extend heartiest congratulations to Vector Technology Institute (VTI) on the occasion of its 20th anniversary of nation building through education.
The growth and development of the Science, Energy and Technology, (SET) sectors remain a key area of focus for this administration because these industries drive economic development by providing increased investments and meaningful jobs for our people.
It is my firm belief that if we are to leverage the benefits of these industries for sustained economic advancement, we must firstly create a truly knowledge based society. Consequently, VTI whose primary focus is developing our local human capital in Information Technology, Telecommunications and Energy remains one of our key partners in our thrust for sustained economic growth.
I therefore commend VTI for establishing worthwhile partnerships with key stakeholders in Science, Energy and Technology institutions to improve programme offerings and ensure our people are fully equipped to manipulate existing technologies for Jamaica’s social and economic advancement.
I also note with enthusiasm that the Curriculum Development Committee has been working assiduously to launch a number of new certification programmes to support skill development in a number of areas including Cyber Security and Software development. This is particularly important at this time when my government is adamantly pursuing the Data Protection Act and the new ICT Act to govern the rapidly changing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.
Jamaica’s technology and energy sectors have come a far way and you have played a pivotal role in their development. I wish for you every success as you mark this significant milestone of making worthwhile contributions to Jamaica’s development.
Hon. Andrew Wheatley, PhD, M.P.,
